WIIS and Embassy of Liechtenstein Co-Host Discussion with Former NATO Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller

On December 5, 2019, Women In International Security (WIIS) and the Embassy of Liechtenstein hosted former NATO Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller. In his opening remarks, Ambassador Kurt Jaeger affirmed the value of gender perspectives in security conversations and the importance of global cooperation.

In her conversation with moderator and WIIS President Chantal de Jonge Oudraat, Gottemoeller emphasized the continuing importance of NATO and multilateral cooperation. Despite increasing perceived tension among NATO leaders, especially on the heels of comments from both the US and French presidents, Gottemoeller said NATO continues to be strong and effective in its goals. She talked about the ambitious NATO policy on Women, Peace and Security. Gottemoeller also spoke about the future of arms control and advocated for extending the bilateral US-Russian New START treaty. She discussed the role of women in nuclear security, including her own experiences as a negotiator.
